Is Growing Out Your Hair Wrong?
WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY?
“Does not even nature itself teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a dishonor to him? But if a woman has long hair, it is a glory to her; for her hair is given to her a for a covering. But if anyone seems to be contentious, we have no such custom, nor do the churches of God.”
Ist Corinthians 11:14-17
WHAT DOES IT TELL US?
Saint Paul teaches that men who grow out their hair bring shame upon themselves. He states that nature itself is against men having long hair. Additionally, he emphasizes that long hair is a "glory" for women, as it enhances their beauty and dignity. According to St. Paul, a woman's hair serves as a "covering."
He makes this point because we are God's creation, and our features are given to us by Him. It was God's design for women to have long hair and for men to have short hair.
WHAT SHOULD YOU DO?
Many young Orthodox Christian men are distancing themselves from the church due to the pressure to cut their hair. Constant comments from church members make them feel unwelcome, preventing them from seeing the church as a safe space. As a result, some choose to leave.
Rather than pressuring them, they should be given the freedom to make their own choices. This way, they can remain connected to the church and strengthen their faith. When they fully understand the meaning behind hair and creation being forced —they will be able to make their own informed decision.
KEY TAKEAWAY
Young Orthodox Christians should not be pressured or criticized for the length of their hair. They should be allowed to make their own choices.
Saint Paul's reasoning was to highlight the distinction between men and women based on their features—men should have short hair, while women should have long hair.
He emphasized this view because he saw hair as part of God's creation. However, St. Paul is not forcing men to cut their hair; rather, he is explaining how hair is perceived within the context of God's design.
